Kelima pemain itu adalah Marco van Basten, Lothar Matthaeus, Robert Lewandowski, dan Lionel Messi.
Van Basten menjadi pemain pertama yang memenangkan Pemain Terbaik Dunia IFFHS pada 1988.
Legenda sepak bola Belanda itu kemudian memenangkannya lagi pada 1989.
Hingga akhirnya, penghargaan terakhir diraih oleh Lothar Matthaeus pada 1990 sebelum vakum hingga 2020.
Baru pada 2020 dan 2021, Lewandowski berhasil memenangkan penghargaan tersebut sebanyak dua kali secara beruntun.
Adapun pada 2022 lalu, Lionel Messi menjadi pemain yang memenangkan penghargaan bergengsi dari IFFHS ini.
