Simon Crafar menilai bahwa Honda dan Yamaha memang mengalami progres di awal 2024 ini. Namun dia khawatir, progres yang mereka lakukan masih tidak cukup untuk membuat dua pabrikan besar itu terangkat dari masa keterpurukan pada musim ini.
“Sedangkan pabrikan Jepang juga telah mengambil langkah di elektronik, itu jelas. Baik Honda dan Yamaha juga ada progres, mereka meningkatkan mesin dan banyak di bagian sasis serta knalpot.”
“Tetapi, saya yakin mereka masih tertinggal beberapa tahun,” ulasnya.
Menurut Crafar, perubahan Honda dan Yamaha tidak akan bisa diraih dengan instan untuk mengejar apa yang telah dilakukan Ducati.
Butuh waktu yang panjang, meskipun kedua tim diketahui sama-sama telah membajak sejumlah insinyur asal Ducati.
Terutama Yamaha yang berhasil menggaet salah satu orang kepercayaan Gigi Dall’Igna, Massimo Bartolini yang kini menjadi Direktur Teknis Yamaha.
Kehadiran mantan insinyur Ducati ke paddock mereka tak serta merta membuat segalanya langsung berubah. Apalagi bekerja di tim yang konservatif juga perlu kesabaran.
“Mungkin butuh waktu berbulan-bulan (ke depan) untuk mengejar ketertinggalan,” kata Crafar.
“Mereka tertinggal dalam bidang elektronik. Hal itulah yang menghambat mereka,” tandas pria asal Inggris itu.
“(Tapi) itu hanya firasat yang saya dapatkan, dari semua yang saya pelajari, dari apa yang saya lihat di trek dan mendengarkan feedback dari para pembalap.”
Meski diyakini bahwa musim ini akan kembali jadi musim ujian, tapi Crafar juga berharap Honda dan Yamaha mampu segera menemukan jalan kesuksesan mereka lagi.
“Tetapi, ini baru tes pramusim. Kita akan kembali lagi (dalam balapan sesungguhnya) dengan kondisi trek yang berbeda. Dan semua orang harus beradaptasi lagi dengan kondisi trek tersebut,” ujar Crafar.
“Itu akan memberikan kesempatan bagi mereka untuk memperbaiki, mungkin tidak akan sama seperti tes.”
“Dan dari situlah nanti pembalap-pembalap sesungguhnya juga akan muncul ketika lampu start menyala. Ini jelas akan berbeda sebab ada yang pandai dalam mengejar putaran waktu saat tes, sedangkan yang lain balapan,” tandasnya.
