Wto Sport – Sekitar seperempat dari semua spesies ikan air tawar berisiko punah akibat ancaman perubahan iklim dan polusi, menurut Daftar Merah Spesies Terancam Punah terbaru yang dikeluarkan pada Senin.
Salah satu ancaman utama adalah perubahan iklim yang merusak siklus air, seperti menurunnya permukaan air tawar dan kenaikan permukaan air laut sehingga memasuki sungai melalui muara, menurut Persatuan Internasional untuk Konservasi Alam (IUCN) yang menetapkan daftar itu beberapa kali dalam setahun.
Dalam analisis mendalam pertama mengenai ikan air tawar, IUCN mengatakan lebih dari 3.000 spesies dari 15.000 spesies dalam kategori berisiko.
Salah satu yang mengalami risiko adalah ikan salmon Atlantik yang hidup di air laut dan air tawar. Ikan ini mengalami penurunan kategori dari “tidak dikhawatirkan” menjadi “hampir terancam punah” dari bukti bahwa populasi globalnya menurun sebesar 23 persen antara 2006 dan 2020, kata IUCN.
Penyebab kematian salmon antara lain kutu salmon dari peternakan ikan dan bertambahnya spesies invasif yang mengancam salmon.
“Memastikan ekosistem air tawar dijaga dengan baik, tetap mengalir dengan volume air cukup dan kualitas air yang baik adalah penting untuk menghentikan berkurangnya spesies dan mempertahankan ketahanan pangan, mata pencarian dan perekonomian di dunia yang berketahanan iklim,” kata Kathy Hughes, salah satu ketua Kelompok Spesialis Ikan Air Tawar Komisi Kelangsungan Hidup Spesies IUCN.
Ikan lain yang dalam posisi bahaya adalah ikan “perampok bergigi besar” yang ditemukan di Kenya yakni di danau gurun pasir terbesar dunia, Danau Turkana.
Spesies ini jatuh dua kategori menjadi “Rentan punah” yang sebagian disebabkan menurunnya volume air di habitatnya akibat perubahan iklim dan juga aliran air berkurang akibat pembuatan bendungan, kata IUCN.
Sedangkan untuk kabar baik, IUCN menyebut hewan Scimitar Oryx tidak lagi berstatus punah di alam liar akibat upaya pelepasliaran yang berhasil di Chad di mana ratusan anak hewan sejenis antelop itu dilahirkan di alam liar.
