Wto Sport – Dustin Poirier akan maju dalam kesempatan terakhirnya untuk menjadi juara UFC pada pertarungan kontra Islam Makhachev di Newark, New Jersey, Amerika Serikat, Sabtu (1/6/2024).
Diamond julukan Poirier untuk ketiga kalinya akan menghadapi petarung dengan kemampuan gulat yang sangat baik pada sebuah pertandingan gelar.
Poirier sudah kalah dua kali dengan cara yang sama yakni melalui submission dari Khabib Nurmagomedov dan Charles Oliveira.
Kali ini, petarung berusia 35 tahun itu akan menghadapi petarung yang sangat berbahaya di UFC, Islam Makhachev sang petarung nomor satu pound-for-pound.

“Saya merasa beberapa hal yang ia (Makhachev) katakan, mungkin tidak (menghormati saya),” kata Poirier kepada MMA Hour dilansir MMAJunkie.
“Tetapi saya akan menaruh tangan saya pada orang ini. Saya akan masuk ke sana untuk melukainya.”
“Ini adalah kesempatan terakhir saya, ayo…. Saya belum terlalu banyak berlatih.”
“Namun, saat saya berada di sasana, Mike Brown (pelatih) mengatakan pada saya, ‘Bung, saya rasa orang ini mungkin meremehkan jiu-jitsu dan meremehkan betapa berbahayanya anda,” ujar Poirier.
Poirier lebih memilih fokus terhadap dirinya sendiri untuk tentunya bisa mengalahkan Makhachev.
Diketahui, Poirier menjadi petarung pertama di kelas ringan UFC yang akan menjadi lawan Makhachev di pertandingan pertahanan gelarnya.
“Saya kira apa yang ia maksud adalah sebuah wawancara dengan Islam yang mengatakan, ‘Ini adalah laga yang mudah bagi saya,” kata Poirier.
“Saya di-mention di banyak hal di Instagram dan Twitter saat ia mengatakan itu.”
“Saya tidak tahu, mungkin ia menjalani semua laga seperti itu, namun saya dapat menghentikan dan mengalahkan siapa pun dengan berat badan 155 pon di dunia.”
“Saya sangat meyakini hal itu, dan ia (Makhachev) tidak harus mempercayainya.”

Selain itu, Poirier lebih memberikan respek terhadap Makhachev dengan mengakui bahwa calon lawannya saat ini lebih baik daripada Khabib Nurmagomedov.
“Permainan submission-nya dari segi jiu-jitsu sedikit lebih fleksibel dibandingkan Khabib,” kata Poirier.
“Khabib memiliki beberapa kuncian leher yang dilakukannya dengan sangat baik, namun Islam menempatkan dirinya dalam posisi yang buruk saat mengincar kuncian armbar.”
